BMW offers two different chargers depending on application. One that attached through the cigarette lighter adaptor (older cars) and one with alligator clips to attach directly to the battery. The cigarette lighter adaptor will work with all Z3's 1996 - 2002, and E85 Z4's 2003 - 2005 (not 2006 - 2008).

Model selection guideline; if your cigarette lighter works when the car is turned off then the cigarette lighter adapter will work. If the power to the cigarette lighter goes off when the car is turned off then you need the one with alligator clips. If in doubt the alligator clips will work with ALL cars.
